Small rod with too fine grit for field?
I was hopeful that this would be a sharpener that I'd take camping and fishing. It is, however, not going to be a good replacement for my ancient Gerber field hone.1. Pretty small little rod. The 9mm/0.375in diameter is OK, but the length is too short for me unless I just slide it sideways down the length of the edge while in use. The small size also means the grit will need to be cleaned out more often, which is not a great thing for field use.2. The grit is finer than I would have liked. No spec is provided, but it feels like it is about 1000 grit or finer. I would avoid trying to sharpen something that is really dull on this. At least for me, this would be the final hone in the field (I would go finer at home) after sharpening on some stones.3. The one kydex sheath I have goes with an M-19 bayonet. Not clear I would want to have a white piece of stone on the outside part of my bayonet sheath, so I will be unlikely to mount this on it - but that's just me. In retrospect, I'd rather that the plastic had been used in a clever little grip that folds over the stone when not in use.4. There is a small rough spot near the part of the rod that goes into the black plastic portion - it's on the "top" side away from the side of the rod that is embedded in the plastic. I had hoped it was a bit of glue or something, but it seems it is a small glitch in the ceramic. Hard to tell for me. I may knock it off with a bit of carbide.5. I don't know what the plastic is - I'm hopeful it is ABS and not PLA or something fragile. I could not find a reference in the instructions or listing. Seems sturdy for now.For now, this is sitting in the kitchen knife drawer and getting cleaned off with a bit of hot water and soft scrub with chlorine. I am not tossing it but I'm not packing it either.4.
